Lifting the Veil on Secret Company Ownership in Trinidad and Tobago (Ebook)
Corruption is bad for business. But it goes further: Corruption can also destabilise entire economies and create the environment for social chaos, financial instability, and the breakdown of law and order.
Modern technology on its own can't solve the problem and you might be tempted to believe that in this new connection economy everything and everyone is findable. Yet one of the major conduits for corruption in the digital age is the anonymous company.
The identities of its owners and principals remain unknown or undetermined, hidden from both citizen and government officials alike.
Not surprisingly, anonymous companies undermine competition, disrupt fair trade and pervert business. What we need now is a fresh lobby to eradicate these companies and a commitment among stakeholders to transparency in beneficial ownership.
Through a European Union grant, the TTEITI and TTTI are collaborating to promote beneficial ownership disclosure in Trinidad and Tobago.
This will be done over a 12-month period through a national beneficial ownership disclosure sensitisation campaign under the theme Lifting the Veil on Secret Company Ownership in Trinidad and Tobago.
This project is the first of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago and will raise awareness among parliamentarians, public servants, business groups, civil society organisations and the public at large about the benefits of beneficial ownership disclosure.
Our mission is to get support for the adoption of stringent policies relating to beneficial ownership disclosure. This work will help the country to better meet its international obligations as they relate to secret company ownership disclosure, the disclosure of politically exposed persons and the stamping out of money laundering and terrorism-related financing.
