PORT-OF-SPAIN, August 22, 2017 — The Trinidad and Tobago Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TTEITI), in partnership with the British High Commission, is embarking on the second phase of a series of regional capacity building workshops to promote best practice in natural resources management in CARICOM.

The target countries include Barbados, Belize and Jamaica and the project is being funded under the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Prosperity Fund Project.

The workshops will seek to promote transparency, accountability and improved natural resources management in the extractive sectors (oil, gas and mining) of the countries through EITI adoption and implementation.

By implementing the EITI, these countries, among other things, can improve government’s revenue receipts, enhance their reputation and assist in boosting the investment climate and ease of doing business indicators.

The first phase of the project was undertaken in 2015, with workshops in Jamaica, Suriname and Guyana. The result saw Suriname becoming an EITI member in May 2017 and Guyana applying for membership this month.

The workshops’ format will be conference styled sessions that feature interactive presentations from regional industry experts, including former Ministers of Government, CEOs of energy companies and heads of non-governmental organisations.

The speakers will engage an audience of regulators, law makers, industry representatives and civil society to explore key extractive sector issues such as revenue transparency, beneficial ownership disclosure, sustainable extraction and environmental stewardship.

The series of workshops will end with a regional symposium in Trinidad that will bring together key stakeholders from each of the countries visited to interact with stakeholders from Trinidad’s extractive industries: government, companies and civil society.

This symposium will consolidate the target countries’ understanding of EITI benefits and the sign-up steps required to be taken when seeking membership of the international organisation headquartered in Oslo, Norway.
